During the Swedish hippie boom in the summer of 1970, a lot of bands emerged on and around the free festivals at Gärdet. One of those were Charlie & Esdor, a sitar and guitar duo. It was actually more of a Norwegian than a Swedish group, but certainly a hippie band in the true sense. They were hanging around with many of the psychedelic bands and musicians in Stockholm back then, such as Träd, Gräs & Stenar, Mecki Mark Men and Bo Hansson, and were constantly gigging their repertoire of flipped-out songs. Had this short-lived band released an album back then, they would surely be considered as one of the “classic” bands of the era, but instead their achievements remain almost lost in time. But that album was pretty close. A finished and ready-for-release master tape was lost after a series of controversies. As one of the more creative bands back then, Charlie & Esdor were truly diverse and could be performing heavy rock one day and Bob Dylan or Evert Taube (a Swedish troubadour) songs the next – not to mention their own material, with lyrics as out there as those penned by Philemon Arthur & the Dung (before they even existed), but always performed with a rare edge and presence.
