Motown’s California offshoot Mowest didn’t last long, but it left behind a few cult curios – and none more prized than Odyssey’s 1972 self-titled debut. Assembled from LA session aces like Don Peake, Donnie Dacus and Gene Page, alongside a crew of wide-eyed West Coast rockers, the group was dreamt up on the fly (“We were invited to lunch… and told we were going to form a band,” recalled Peake). What followed was a swirling collision of warm Motown grooves, psych-folk drift and cosmic pop idealism. Lead single ‘Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love’ has long been a secret weapon for DJs, but the whole LP moves between 5th Dimension-style sunshine and Khruangbin-adjacent drift. This first-ever US reissue comes on blue-green ocean spray vinyl with full artwork and lyric insert, remastered by Mike Milchner.
